Storms cause both power outages and flooding, which makes a sump pump one of the most important things to back up. Most 1/3 hp pumps run on about 800 W but need 2,000 W or more for a split second to start. That startup surge is the spec to check first.

Which stations can start and run a sump pump?

Based on a 1/3 hp pump (800 W running, 2,000 W startup) running about 10% of the time. Your duty cycle depends on how wet it is: in a heavy storm, pumps can run far more often.

Sump pump (1/3 hp): 800 W running, 2,000 W start-up, ~10% duty cycle. Current models; “Borderline” means within 10% of the station’s rating.

Find your pump's numbers

  • Check the label for running amps and multiply by 120 to get watts.
  • Startup draw is usually 2–3× running watts for induction motors.
  • 1/2 hp pumps can need 3,000 W or more to start. Choose a station with at least 3,000 W surge.

Tips

  • Use UPS mode so the pump switches to battery automatically, since outages often happen at night.
  • Keep the station off the floor and away from water.
  • Consider a battery backup pump as well. Dedicated systems are designed for this one job.
